1984, and started working in law enforcement in 2005, as a detention officer at

Carney's Fire Department
Captain Bud Berry, Carney Fire
Department
Captain Berry was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma. His family moved to Kansas when he was a
young boy. It was in Kansas that Captain Berry began his career as a firefighter. He
started as a reserve in 1998, and was hired full time in 1999. Captain Berry and his wife
moved their family to Carney in 2006, when Captain Berry accepted a job with Special
Energy. Captain Berry joined the Carney Fire Department in 2006, and currently serves as
a Captain. Captain Berry is certified in; firefighter I and II, EMT-B, Hazardous Material
Technician I and II, Arson Detection, Leadership Strategies I, II and III,
Vehicle, Machinery and Aircraft rescue and Extrication and Advanced Extrication,
Terrorism Explosives Awareness, suicide Bombings and Energetic Materials,
Explosives Demonstrations and Industrial Terrorism. He is also qualified and
holds Certifications in 25 other areas of professional fire fighting and rescue
techniques and specialty applications.
Coming from a Department that had everything they needed to a small department
that had to make do with what they have was quite an adjustment for Captain
Berry. He also
said the he has a higher level of respect for other members of the Carney Fire
Department because they are all volunteers. “Everyone here is doing this because
they want to, not because it is their job. Most of our people are really
dedicated.”
Captain Berry and his wife have two sons and enjoy camping and other outdoor
activities. Captain Berry coached little league Baseball last year and was an assistant
coach this year.
Captain Berry explained his dedication to the fire department as fulfilling a need in
the community and the satisfaction of doing a good job, but he confessed that he
still enjoys the excitement level and the challenge of firefighting. Thanks
Captain Berry
and keep up the good work.
Captain Bobbie Miller, Carney Fire
Department
Our Community has a valuable asset in our Fire Department. Starting in this
issue, in an effort to give some recognition to a department of volunteers, we
will be highlighting a member of the department we want to share their
dedication and the professional level of service that they give to the Fire
Department and our community.
Captain Miller served in the United States Navy from 1988 to 1992, as a Fire
Fighter Engineer and a Rescue Team member. Captain Miller joined the Carney Fire
Department in 1993, and is now serving as a Captain and Training Officer. Captain
Miller is
Fire Fighter 1, certified along with Ropes Rescue 1, 2 and 3 as well as Auto
Extraction basic and advanced. He is an Emergency Services Instructor and a
Rescue Field Instructor for OSU. Bobby is a Hazmat Tech, Confined Space Rescue
Tech, Trench Rescue Tech, Incident Safety Officer, Aircraft Rescue, Flammable
Gas Emergency and Emergency Medical First Responder.
Captain Miller works for the Environmental Management in Guthrie. He is a single father
raising three boys ages 12, 8 and 5. He made time to Coach Little League
Baseball this year and has Coached Little League Football as well. When he is
not working or training future Fire and Rescue Personnel, he enjoys spending
time hunting, fishing and camping with his boys.
Captain Miller explained what drives him to volunteer so much of his time to serve his
community. “When I go on a call most of the time I know the
person that I am helping. They are people I grew up with, went to school with or
children of those people. When I was in the Navy, we were stationed in the Gulf for a time.
The work and rescue was non-stop and I was tired all the time. I would get care
packages sent from my friends and neighbors and people in Carney. Those packages
really meant a lot to me and I swore that somehow I would pay those people
back.” |
